The Mazda 2 is often regarded as one of the best handling B-segment hatchback money can buy. After nearly seven years of being on sale, a replacement is said to be coming soon.
If reports from Japan are to be believed, the next-gen Mazda 2 could debut as soon as September 2021 – seven months away.
At least for the Japanese market, the next-gen Mazda 2 will ride on Mazda’s own platform, unlike the European market Mazda 2, which is slated to be a rebadged TNGA-BToyota Yaris. Yikes.
Platform aside, Japanese sources also claimed that the next-gen Mazda 2 will get a range of powertrains, including a brand-new three-cylinder SkyActiv-X engine. Other engine choices include two carried-over 1.5-litre engines, one turbodiesel and one petrol.
The Japanese source also went on to say that the next-gen Mazda 2 could be fitted with a range extender electric powertrain with a rotary engine in 2022. As far-fetched as it may sound, Mazda did confirm that the rotary engine will return, albeit functioning as a range extender in the Mazda MX-30.
