Sources also reveal that the fourth-generation model will have a hybrid option alongside a regular small displacement engine, ensuring that Mazda gets the Thai Eco Car and Thai xEV incentives.
In last November's financial results presentation, the company said that they are looking at installing Toyota Hybrid System (THS) in an 'upcoming SUV' for the United States market, as well as selling a THS-equipped car in China.
A similar arrangement could take place for the upcoming Mazda 2, too.
Prior to this, Japanese sources also mentioned that the next-gen model could be fitted with a range extender electric powertrain with a rotary engine in 2022. Mazda has confirmed that the rotary engine will return, albeit functioning as a range extender in the Mazda MX-30.
The current Mazda 2 is the third-generation model, on sale since 2014 and - at least in Malaysia - facelifted in 2020. Officially, Mazda has not revealed anything about its successor.
