Normally when it comes to launches, Perodua would take a back seat compared to its Indo or Japanese twins from Toyota and Daihatsu. However, in the case of the next-generation 2023 D74A Perodua Axia, it could be launched ahead of its Indonesian twins, the Toyota Agya and Daihatsu Ayla.
Bookings and estimated prices of the all-new Axia have been announced but over in the archipelago, our Indo colleagues from AutoFun ID have received an invitation from Toyota for the launch of a new model on 13-Feb 2023.
The invitation only mentions that it is the “World Premiere of Toyota’s New Excitement Icon” but AutoFun ID suspects that it is the launch of the all-new Toyota Agya.
Perodua has not mentioned the next-gen Axia’s launch date but given the booking announcement, we could see it being introduced in Malaysia within this month (February).
While both the next-gen Agya and Axia would be sharing the same DNGA platform, the Indonesians would be getting a bigger naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre WA-VE 3-cylinder engine (88 PS/112 Nm) instead of the 1.0-litre 1KR-VE 3-pot (68 PS/91 Nm) that would be fitted in the D74A Axia.
The engine is also found in the Daihatsu Rocky/Toyota Raize and in the Indo Agya, it is expected to be mated with a 5-speed manual transmission or a D-CVT automatic. The Malaysian Axia will only see the latter gearbox at launch with the MT expected to be introduced much later.
Interestingly enough, the next-gen Agya could also be equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity according to AutoFun ID. Meanwhile, the D74A Axia is only available with Perodua’s own SmartLink connectivity for the higher variants.
As for the other Indonesian twin, the next-gen Daihatsu Ayla could be launched a bit later. Our colleagues at AutoFun ID speculate that the Ayla might be launched on 15-February 2023 which is just in time for Indonesian International Motor Show (IIMS) 2023 which will be held from 16-26 February 2023.
