The MG 3 Hybrid+ variant is powered by a fuel-sipping 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder petrol engine, producing 102 PS and 128 Nm, and is boosted by a 136 PS / 250 Nm electric motor, achieving a combined system output of 194 PS.

Unlike typical hybrids that don’t need a conventional transmission, the MG 3 comes with a 3-speed automatic, though further details on how it works are limited.

Like Toyota hybrids for instance, the MG 3 is a two-motor, series-parallel hybrid, meaning that the engine can drive the front wheels and charge the battery simultaneously.

However, the MG 3 Hybrid+ relies on a larger-than-usual 1.83 kWh battery allowing for further electric-only driving range and better performance. The claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time 8.0 seconds – claimed to be the best in the non-GTI hatchback segment, whilst fuel consumption is just 4.4-litre/100 km, according to WLTP standards.

Elsewhere, the MG 3 Hybrid+ also features a 7-inch digital instrument screen, a 10.25-inch central infotainment system, and the MG Pilot ADAS suite, which includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Change Assist, FCW, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, among others.

According to the announcement, testing for the MG 3 Hybrid+ has been ongoing since the beginning of 2024, covering over 10,000 km.

This includes collecting fuel efficiency data according to NEDC and WLTP standards, and tuning various systems to ensure the vehicle performs well on all road surfaces in Thailand, including smooth city roads, steep hills, and challenging weather conditions such as extreme heat, heavy rain and waterlogged roads.

Closer to home, MG Malaysia hit the ground running earlier this year with the launch of the MG ZS EV at RM 125,999 and the MG 4 BEV offered in 4 variants priced between RM 104k and RM 159k. Note prices are not inclusive of inspection and registration fees.

Steven Du, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia, said previously that although he is very optimistic about the growth potential of BEVs, he recognizes that traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) models will remain popular for many years to come. Thus, MG Malaysia will not limit its product offerings to just battery EV (BEV) models.

Given this strategy, could the MG 3 Hybrid+ make its way to Malaysia?
