With the likes of the Rivian R1T and the Ford F-150 Lightning, even the macho-looking pick-up trucks are going all-electric (EV). However, those full-size American trucks are too big for the global market and this is where Mitsubishi plans to step in with an all-electric version of the upcoming all-new 2023 Mitsubishi Triton.

The looks of the next-generation Mitsubishi Triton were previewed on the Mitsubishi XRT Concept which was just unveiled at the ongoing Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) 2023. No mention of what powertrains will be used specifically though the Three Diamonds have said it will be brand-new.

Aside from a new internal combustion engine (ICE), the all-new Triton will also be offered with an EV version though this won’t be launched very soon. During a media Q&A session following the unveiling of the XRT Concept, Mitsubishi Motors President and CEO, Takao Kato confirmed that a Triton EV is in the works.
Via a translator, Kato-san has said that Triton EV will be an important addition to the line-up because “it is aligned with (Mitsubishi Motors’) commitment to carbon neutrality”.

The Three Diamonds is planning to roll out 16 new models including 9 electrified models over the next 5 years. The all-new Triton will still offer diesel powerplants in addition to the EV but it would take a few years before the latter is launched. The all-new diesel-powered Triton, meanwhile, is planned to be launched in July 2023.

Mitsubishi isn’t the only brand looking to introduce a battery-electric truck in the next few years. At Toyota Motor Thailand’s 60th Anniversary Celebration, a prototype of the Toyota Hilux Revo BEV Concept was unveiled by the former President and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation, Akio Toyoda.
