Another FMCO SOP U-turn: Cycling is not allowed

The standard operating procedures (SOP) has yet to cease making U-turns. Now the Ministry of Youth and Sports has clarified that cycling is prohibited although jogging and other static exercises are still allowed.

This latest round of changes was posted on the Youth and Sports Ministry’s Twitter on Tuesday (15-June-2021).

There was no explanation on why cycling is no longer allowed. Instead, the ministry emphasised that jogging and other static activities are only allowed on the condition that these activities are conducted with the physical distancing of at least 2 to 3 metres.

Other than that, the activities are limited to between 7 am to 8 pm and must be carried out in an open area as well as in the neighbourhood.

Other static exercises that the ministry has allowed are activities such as running on the spot, skipping, stretching, and star jumps.

The ministry was also quick to define what they mean by ‘within a neighbourhood’. They gave the example that a jogger in ‘Housing Estate A’ running around in his locality without crossing over to the adjacent ‘Housing Estate B’.

Another example given illustrates an individual living in a gated community being allowed to do static exercises in any open area within his neighbourhood.

Previously, the National Security Council (MKN) announced that cycling was given the green light by the Youth and Sports Ministry to go on when MCO 3.0 was instated nationwide.
