The Toyota Avanza is a very well-known nameplate having been Indonesia’s best-selling vehicle for quite some time. However, with the next-generation due to be launched in 2022, not only will the next-gen Avanza be getting a front-wheel drive layout and possibly hybrid tech, but it might not even be called an Avanza either.
In a shocking scoop covered by Otodriver, the Avanza name might not be carried over into the next generation along with the rear-wheel drive layout. At least for Toyota.
The unnamed source told the Indonesian media that the rear-wheel drive layout will continue on with the Daihatsu Xenia, hinting that the outgoing model will be sold alongside the next-generation model which could receive a new name.
It hasn’t been disclosed what the new name will be for the Avanza replacement but fans in Indonesia and Malaysia might miss the name. The Avanza has been introduced in Indonesia since 2003 and eventually became Indonesia’s most popular car for 13 consecutive years between 2006 and 2019.
In Malaysia, the Avanza was introduced in 2004 and reached its peak in 2006 as it contributed 40% of Toyota’s sales in Malaysia that year.
Apart from Indonesia and Malaysia, the Toyota Avanza is also sold outside of ASEAN including Mexico, South Africa, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Caribbean. It was even sold in China under the FAW badge.
Meanwhile, the Avanza replacement will share the same platform as the next-gen Perodua Alza. We’ve covered pretty extensively on what could be expected for the next-gen Alvanza right here if you want to know more.
