The trend of upward prices for legendary Japanese performance cars from late eighties to early noughties is showing no signs of abating. The EK9 Honda Civic Type R that you see here has just changed hands for a cool JPY 11 million. That is about RM 413,179! That's a new world record, the previous one being RM 300k!
This particular Phoenix Yellow unit is so pristine, the plastic wraps are still on the seats! Everything from the steering, upholstery, and Recaro seats looks unmolested, as if kept in a time capsule. Mileage? A mere 411 km. How is that even possible?
This EK9-generation Civic Type R had all the goodies from Honda's racing know-how: A hand-ported B16B 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder VTEC engine (185 PS, 160 Nm), close-ratio 5-speed manual, helical LSD, all-round double wishbone suspension (madness!), Recaro seats, and a Momo steering wheel.
I remember reading one review on this particular EK9 Civic Type R, where it earned the moniker 'racetrack refugee'. That is not far from the truth at all. Performance Hondas of this era were defined by superb handling, and a screaming, high-revving naturally aspirated VTEC engine (the B16B redlined at 8,500 rpm).
Suffice to say, RM 400k just bought the new owner a whole lot of happiness, and 8,500 rpm worth of VTEC revs.
