The Road Transport Department (JPJ) recently approved the installation of 4 new Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) cameras near the entry and exit ways of the Menora Tunnel on the North-South Expressway.
The cameras are courtesy of Plus Malaysia Bhd and will be used to monitor the traffic for north and south-bound traffic around the accident hot spot.
According to the JPJ director-general, the area around the Menora Tunnel has been an accident hot spot for years. This is due to the steep slopes, sharp bends, as well as downhill stretches before and after the tunnel.

JPJ estimates the cameras will be installed by this year and hopes that the additional cameras will help reduce the number of accidents along the stretch.
Currently, there are 18 Awas cameras installed along the north-to-south stretch of the North-South Expressway.
Officers stationed at Enforcement Highway Monitoring Centre will monitor those breaking traffic rules as well as monitoring overloaded commercial vehicles, the misuse of emergency lanes, dangerous objects on the highway, accidents and any other emergencies.
