- Hyundai's way of modernising the front grille
- To help aid autonomous driving
- Hyundai hopes to mass produce the Lighting Grille by 2023
Back in June 2021, Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Motor Group’s parts supplier, released a statement announcing they are working on a front grille with LED lighting functions simply named Lighting Grille. Now, the research has come up with some awesome prototypes to give us an idea of what it is.
As the car continues to evolve, so does the grille and its purpose of it. Previously in internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, the grilles were placed strategically to direct airflow into the engine and keep things cool. However, with electric vehicles (EV), there is no need for a grille.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0'); });
So, to keep up with the times, Hyundai Mobis decided to modernise the grille’s function by adding new features to it, hence the Lighting Grille. The grille is expected to be used as a way to communicate more actively with the outside world.
The first example of how the Lighting Grille can be utilised is to act as an EV charging indicator. That way, EV owners can just take a glance at the grille at the charging progress without needing to head inside the car.

But other than that, the Lighting Grille is also expected to aid autonomous driving mode as well as act as a welcome light, emergency warning light, and also act as a sound beat display just for fun.
Hyundai Mobis is currently still conducting reliability verification for commercialising the Lighting Grille design. Hyundai hopes that the grille can be put into mass production by next year.
“We plan to continuously introduce innovative products that combine technological perfection with emotional quality to the global market in response to changes in future car trends,” said Lee Woo-il, Head of Hyundai Mobis Module Lab.
