Everyone's favourite 4x4, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, more affectionately knowns as the G-Wagen, will be electrified in line with the brand's EQ product strategy. It will be called the EQG, which is consistent with the current EQ naming convention, and set to launch in 2024.

Interestingly, the EQG will not sit on an all-new platform, but will employ a modified version of the current G-Class platform to make it EV-ready. The EQG concept car could make an appearance at the 2021 IAA Mobility motorshow in Munich, according to this source.
This UK publication confirms that Mercedes has already trademarked the EQG 560 and EQG 580 names. The same publication has also shared a render of how the electrified G-Class could look like.
For most part, the EQG retains its iconic, squared-off shape. What is new is the blanked-off grille (but still massive) and the two-tone paintjob that is consistent with other Mercedes EQ models, like the EQS.
Speaking of which, the EQG will most likely derive its powertrain from the EQS as well, although nothing is confirmed at the moment. Since the EQG 580 name is being trademarked, expect it to have the EQS 580's 523 PS, 855 Nm powertrain, and AWD system.
While the EQS 580 boasts an electric range of 770 km (WLTP cycle), expect the heavier, less aerodynamic EQG to fare slightly poorer in this regard. In any case, time will tell.
On the inside, expect the EQG's cabin to mix the best of the existing G-Class' ruggedness together with the EQS' futuristic interior.

It will be interesting to see how Mercedes incorporates the EQS' party piece, the MBUX Hyperscreen (141 cm in length) into the existing cabin architecture of the G-Class.

In Malaysia, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class comes in two flavours. The first is the G 350 d AMG Line (RM 999,888, SST discounts applied) that's propelled by a turbocharged 3.0-litre, inline-six diesel engine (290 PS, 600 Nm) paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Further up, you have the range-topping, fire-breathing Mercedes-AMG G63 (RM 1,446,888, SST discounts applied) that is powered by a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine (593 PS, 850 Nm) which is also paired to a 9-speed automatic.
