We may never let slip an opportunity to poke a little fun at BMWs but we’re also ones to never deny that their M division is all sex appeal with four wheels. In fact, BMW Motorsport GmbH was formed 50 years ago on May 24, 1972, making this year their golden anniversary. What better way to celebrate than with a video of their best moments?
Rightfully dubbed the “most powerful letter in the world,” the video is a greatest hits of all their most desriable machines, including the mid-engined M1 and even the radical V12-powered X5 Le Mans meant as a showcase of their talents.
Most of the footage is from their racing endeavours but the marketing people did manage to squeeze in the fastest BMW ever; the new M4 CSL, as well as a camouflaged M3 Touring that will be making its global debut at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed.

While meant to celebrate the greatness of M, the video doesn’t shy away from the newer, high-riding BMWs that sport the M emblem, such as the X3 M; much to the chagrin of some M purists.

However, slapping the M badge on these models is essentially producing your own money printing machine and at the end of the day, BMWs in the business of selling cars… not dreams.

Lest we forget, the M1 was the first and, until now, only dedicated M car. That’s about to change with the arrival of the XM. It says a lot that the second dedicated M model will be a plug-in hybrid SUV and the most powerful production BMW ever.

The video includes the M5 F90’s drift record from early 2018 that saw the cars refuelled mid-drift from another M5 sliding alongside and a custom refuelling jig; proving the people at M are as crazy as their cars.
Fittingly, the video ends with the timeless 3.0 CSL. Again, it’s the work of the marketing people as the iconic machine could be a nod to the anticipated revival of the nameplate expected before the year end.

Rumours indicate the car will be based on the M4 CSL but with a manual gearbox and around 600 HP from the inline-six mill, in other words, a proper, vintage M machine. Those same whispers claim only 50 cars will be coachbuilt with influences from the 2015 3.0 CSL Hommage concept.
The price? 700,000 Euros… or about RM 3.3 million. Sounds about right.
