BMW Malaysia: EVs now make up 10 percent of sales, something 'big' coming Jan 2023

BMW Malaysia has marked a stellar year of sales with regard to their EV models in 2022, also suggesting that there is more to come in 2023.

At the launch of the Wheelcorp Premium 4S centre launch in Bukit Tinggi, Hans de Visser, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia said that 10 percent of all BMW cars sold in Malaysia are now EVs, and this number is set to grow in the coming years.

He added, “Over the next five years, we will see the premium segment in these areas grow by over 20% and we need to prime ourselves to meet this growth,”

BMW Malaysia consistently delivered over 8,000 vehicles both in 2020 and 2021, during the peak of the pandemic. Assuming a similar trend or small percentage of growth in 2022, we can estimate that BMW has delivered between 800 and 1,000 EVs this year.

The BMW i model portfolio has steadily grown in Malaysia over the past 2 years, there are 4 models currently on offer – namely the iX3, i4 (and i4 M50), iX and i7.

The BMW i7 however, was previewed in July of this year with an indicative price between RM 600k – RM 700k, but customer deliveries have yet to be announced.

However, that may not be all. In speaking to a senior representative of BMW Malaysia, the company is already planning ‘something big’ in January 2023.

Now, something big can mean many things, but our money is on BMW Malaysia formally introducing the BMW i7 or the ultimate BMW SUV, the ‘really big’ 653 PS / 800 Nm (G09) BMW XM.

In October of this year, BMW Malaysia opened its order books for the XM, the M division’s first standalone model, which carries an indicative price starting from RM 1.4 million or RM 820k if you were to purchase it in tax-free Langkawi.
