Thailand car buyers can look forward to cheaper BMW plug-in hybrid models with the opening of BMW’s first high voltage battery plant in Asia outside of China.
The THB 500 million plant is operated in partnership with battery supplier Draxlmaier Group and is located at WHA Chonburi Industrial Estate 2. It is equipped to assemble the latest generation (Gen4) of the BMW Group’s high-voltage batteries, not just the casing but the battery modules as well.
Final batteries are then transported to the BMW Group Manufacturing Thailand’s Rayong assembly plant for the production of the BMW 530e.

Since 2017, BMW Group Manufacturing Thailand has assembled four BMW plug-in hybdrids – 330e (F30), 530e (G30), 740Le (G11), and X5 40e (F15).

Prior to this, Thailand-assembled BMW plug-in hybrid models were using high voltage batteries imported from Dingolfing, Germany.
Speaking to Thai daily Bangkok Post, Uwe Quaas, Managing Director of BMW's local production said the local supplier can increase BMW's local content proportion in its car assembly.
"The assembly cost of BMW also reduces as well," he added.
The battery plant is among the beneficiaries of a THB 700 million incentive by the Thailand Board of Investment for BMW to promote local assembly of plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles.
