For generations, the BMW M3 was sold as a sedan, a coupe, and a convertible - the latter 2 became the M4. But there never was an M3 wagon even though BMW has offered a wagon 3 Series for years. Until now. 

The closest to an M3 wagon would be the M340i Touring but some purists wouldn't consider that a real M-badge car.

BMW announced a teaser to finally give the 3 Series wagon the proper M treatment, making the G20 3 Series the first-ever station wagon to have a real M3 Touring.

The teaser only shows the rear of the M3 Touring but by enhancing the brightness, you can see that it will have 4 tailpipes and a redesigned bumper.

BMW intends to keep the practicality of the station wagon intact but says that it will be powered by a 6-cylinder M TwinPower turbo engine. No further mention of what specific powerplant would be used but expect it to be similar to the 3.0-litre S58 engine that will be powering the upcoming F80 M3 sedan and F82 M4 coupe.

While BMW intends to launch 2 variants of the F80 and F82 - an RWD mated to a 6-speed manual and a Competition variant with xDrive 4WD mated to an 8-speed DCT, it’s difficult to say whether the M3 Touring will be offered with both variants.

BMW has made M-badged wagons before with the E34 M5 and E60 M5. The aforementioned BMW M340i Touring was another performance BMW wagon. Station wagons and estates aren’t really a popular body style in Malaysia. But for some petrolheads, there is an aura of coolness with wagons, apart from having a morbid connection to hearses.

The M3 Touring is currently going through early development stages, so expect it to be launched in 2022.
