New system alert! BMW Group announced starting March 2023, the group will be expanding the BMW Operating System 8 and integrating Android Automotive OS (AAOS) into certain models in the series.

The move is the second technological approach alongside the current Linux-based variant. The different software platforms will allow the infotainment system to be individually configured for every model.

BMW Group did not state which series the new OS will be made available to but they are clear that only certain models will get the new system and not the entire range of BMW cars.

Similar to now, the OS will continue to be updated over the air (OTA) at regular intervals with BMW Remote Software Upgrade.

“We are integrating the best aspects of all worlds – that could be our own in-house developments, Open Source or commercial software products, depending on what the specific solution looks like. We make sure our customers always enjoy a unique, customised digital experience in their vehicle,” said Stephan Durach, Senior Vice-President Connected Company and Development Technical Operations at the BMW Group.

BMW Group is not the first manufacturer to jump on the AAOS band-wagon. Volvo is the first manufacturer to announce AAOS on their vehicles such as the Volvo XC60
