Yes, the BMW X8 is happening. BMW has reportedly filed a trademark for the X8 M name plate in Germany’s DPMA database. And if the rumours are true, the X8 M will be a plug-in hybrid that makes somewhere in region of 700 PS and 750 PS.

The BMW X8 will be slotted above the X7, likely to be the “coupe” version of it like the X6 is to the X5, and X4 to the X3, and yeah, you get the picture.

Presently, no BMW M models are electrified. However, the President of BMW M division, Markus Flasch said in an interview, “M has always stood for performance… there is no conflict of, for instance, having electrified powertrains involved…”

“At the moment we are working on three alternatives, we are working on 48-volt systems, we are working on plug-in hybrids and we’re working on fully battery electric vehicles.” He added.

The jury is still out on how much power exactly the BMW X8 M will make. Car magazine reports that the hybrid powertrain could unleash 750 PS in its most potent state. Mating the 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8, seen in the BMW M5, to a 200 PS electric motor.

If that translates to reality, we’re looking at the most powerful BMW car yet. Also the most expensive, as it’ll sit at the top of BMW’s lineup. Reports are saying that the BMW X8 will likely arrive sometime in 2022 or 2023.

The quest for automotive knowledge began as soon as the earliest memories. Various sources information, even questionable ones, have been explored including video games, television, magazines, or even internet forums. Still stuck in that rabbit hole.
