A day after teasing an image of a sea lion, BYD Malaysia followed up with another teaser but this time revealing more hints on what type of Sealion is approaching here soon.
If you’re lost in the joke, BYD has two different models named Sealion which have different powerplants and overall design. There is the Sealion 6, which is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV and the Sealion 7, which is a fully electric (BEV) coupe SUV.
Based on BYD Malaysia’s latest teaser image, it seems that the BEV Sealion 7 is the one that would be launched here soon. The Sealion 7 is one of BYD’s latest BEV models and will be a direct competitor against the Tesla Model Y and the XPeng G6.
The Sealion 7 is the first model built on the e-Platform 3.0 Evo chassis that features a 12-in-1 electric drive system, supporting electric motors that spin up to 23,000 rpm which is the highest of any BYD model ever.
BYD’s Model Y competitor is offered in right-hand drive (RHD) configuration with the Sealion 7 making its export debut in Hong Kong. Two electric powertrains are offered – a single rear-mounted motor that makes 313 PS/380 Nm as well as a dual-motor set-up that generates a combined 530 PS/690 Nm.
The Sealion 7 is juiced up by an 82.56-kWh Blade battery pack with a maximum range of up to 567 km under NEDC standards.
In Hong Kong, the Sealion 7 starts from HKD 268,000 (~RM 149k) which easily undercut the Model Y which starts from HKD 295,000 (~RM 164k) as well as the G6 which is priced from HKD 299,900 (~RM 168k).
As the Sealion 7 is still absent in Southeast Asia, could Malaysia be the debut market for BYD’s coupe SUV BEV?
