If you think you’ve seen it all, think again. On 25 October 2020, news that a man had successfully stolen a brand-new Honda Civic 1.8S police patrol vehicle (MPV) from Seberang Perai Utara district HQ went viral on social media. The suspects were enjoying a joyride in Shah Alam before the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) caught up with them.
A source told News Straits Times that the men who stole the MPV were brothers, aged 28 and 32. The brothers had posed as policemen from the information technology resources unit and gained access to the MPV under the pretext of inspecting its dashcam.

According to the source, the incident happened very fast as the suspects were able to speed off from the district police headquarter compound without the supervising police sergeant suspecting anything.
The supervisor only realised that something was amidst when the suspects failed to return the MPV after 30 minutes and radioed messages over the walkie-talkie went unanswered.
PDRM only managed to catch up with the stolen MPV in Shah Alam, 370 km away from where the Civic was first stolen. Only the elder brother and a woman in her 20s, believed to be his girlfriend, were inside the vehicle. Both were arrested at the scene.
Following the arrest of the couple, PDRM also managed to track down the younger brother in Tasek Gelugor. The 28-year-old was arrested to assist in further investigations.
PDRM later learned that the suspect had picked up his girlfriend from Tasek Gelugor and tried to rob a sundry shop before heading towards Shah Alam. They also learnt that the suspect stole the MPV as an act of bravado to impress his girlfriend.
As it turns out, both men have numerous past criminal records and were hardcore drug addicts. The elder brother was previously detained by the police only earlier this month for electric cable theft. The source also revealed that investigations showed that the main suspect suffers from mental disabilities.
Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor of the Seberang Perai Utara district police stated that PDRM is investigating the matter under Section 379A for theft of motor vehicle and Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a policeman.
