On 29-March 2023, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim visited China for the first time to discuss the exchange between Malaysia and China in economy and trade. Executives of Chery International were also invited to have an in-depth discussion with the PM’s envoy during his visit.

Discussions were held between representatives of Chery International and the Minister of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia (MITI), Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz on the investment plan and development direction in Malaysia.

Malaysia highly recognises Chery’s international corporate strength and showed great interest in this investment plan. The Anhui-based carmaker was also invited to participate in the round table conference with PM Anwar and the Malaysia-China Business Forum which was held on 1-April.

Chery is planning on making a return to Malaysia after being on hiatus for 5 years. It is reported that Chery has set up a wholly-owned subsidiary in Malaysia which is scheduled to be unveiled in the second quarter of this year.
The Chinese carmaker was reportedly in the final stages of negotiations with Inokom to start local assembly (CKD) of its models which includes the Chery Omoda 5 and the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro.

To recap, the Omoda 5 will be pitted against the Honda HR-V while the Tiggo 8 Pro would be a 3-row SUV rival against the upcoming Proton X90.
