We’ve heard a lot about the Chery Omoda 5, now it is officially a production car as the first model has just rolled out of the factory in Anhui, China. But that’s not the big news of the day, Chery Malaysia has confirmed that the SUV has been earmarked to launch on our shores!

The Chery Omoda 5 made its world debut at the 2021 Guangzhou Auto Show. The SUV immediately caught the eyes of all present thanks to its sleek frameless front grille and overall futuristic design.

With the introduction of the Omoda 5, Chery is set to enter a new era known as Chery 4.0. And in the new era, the manufacturer won’t just be focussing on left-hand drive countries but they are also set to up its game in right-hand drive markets.

Hence the commitment to make a return to Malaysia and even Australia. But according to a Chinese report, the Omoda 5 will start its globe-trotting ways as soon as the first half of 2022. The first stop is Russia before it enters the European market and then later Malaysia.

Designers and engineers spent a total of 18 months designing the Omoda 5 from the ground up. Chery claims the Omoda 5 is a product of a unified global platform and reflects the company’s new ideas.

Aimed at consumers aged between 25 to 30 years old, Chery promises the Omoda 5 will be equipped with the latest technology and even other aspects that those of that age group demands.

So, expect modern connectivity such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto once the car goes on sale in international markets.

In China, the Omoda 5 is estimated to go on sale around RMB 110,000 (~RM 73,000) to RMB 150,000 (~RM 99,000). The SUV will face tough rivals such as the Toyota Corolla Cross which is priced from RMB 135,000 (~RM 89,000) to RMB 175,000 (~RM 115,000).

The Omoda 5 will be powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 197 PS and 290 Nm. More details to come as we near the official launch of the SUV.
