- CKD Mazda CX-30 to be launched in Malaysia by early-2023
- Estimated prices to be similar to a CX-5
- CBU Mazda CX-30 is currently priced from RM 145,759 to RM 168,673
Following Bermaz Motor’s announcement of the fully imported (CBU) Mazda MX-30 EV, we can now make a reasonable conclusion that Mazda’s third locally-assembled (CKD) model will be the Mazda CX-30.
Both the Mazda CX-30 and Mazda MX-30 are related cars, and have previously been rumoured to be candidates for local assembly at Mazda Malaysia’s plant in Kulim.

Sharing the same platform with the CX-30, the MX-30 uses more expensive rear-hinged, Mazda RX-8-like ‘freestyle’ doors. It is only available as a battery EV or a mild hybrid (2.0-litre SkyActiv-G), while the CX-30 is powered by a regular 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G engine.
There’s also a fully electric variant of the CX-30 in China but that’s a China-only model so it’s not relevant to us.
Bermaz has yet to confirm the identity of its next CKD model but the company did say that it is working on expanding its CKD models offering beyond the Mazda CX-5 and Mazda CX-8.

At the preview of the CBU Mazda MX-30, local assembly of the MX-30 EV has been ruled out (at least for the near-term), while the chances for a CKD mild-hybrid MX-30 is low.
That leaves us with the Mazda CX-30, which already has a CKD programme running in Thailand (only for domestic sales).
With the process to pack CKD kits - a rather tedious task as car production lines are meant to run non-stop, rather than having parts unfinished vehicles pulled off the line – already established, it should be fairly easy for Mazda Malaysia, the local manufacturing joint venture between Mazda Motor and Bermaz, to order CKD kits for the Mazda CX-30.
The Mazda CX-30 is currently imported (CBU) from Japan. Prices range from RM 145,759 to RM 168,673, valid until 30-June 2022.
With local assembly, excise tax will be lower, allowing Bermaz to reduce prices of the CX-30 to be closer to that of the Mazda CX-5’s (from RM 134,403 to RM 176,852).
As for estimated launch timing, it should be sometime in early-2023.
