Recently, the Toyota bZ4X, which is the Japanese giant’s first dedicated EV-only model was launched in two of the largest automotive markets in Southeast Asia mere days apart. The electric SUV made its ASEAN debut in Thailand before being launched in Indonesia.

Both markets only offer one variant of the bZ4X but with different layouts entirely. The Thai-spec bZ4X is only offered with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) configuration while the single-motor, front-wheel-drive (FWD) version is the only variant offered in Indonesia.

The FWD bZ4X’s single motor produces 204 PS and 266 Nm while the AWD variant’s dual motors make a combined output of 218 PS and 337 Nm. Both variants are juiced up by a 71.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a range of 500 km for the FWD and 411 km for the AWD.

The bZ4X supports both AC charging of up to 6.6 kW via a Type 2 port and fast-charging DC of up to 150 kW via a CCS2 port.

Even with the different configurations offered in both markets, the Thai- and Indo-spec bZ4X are well-equipped. Features offered in both markets include LED headlights, panoramic sunroof, leather seats, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Both markets also offer the latest generation of Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 ADAS as standard along with a self-parking feature. However, both markets gave different names for this feature with the Thai press release calling it “Intelligent Parking Assist” while the Indonesian team calls it “Advanced Park”.

Given the small percentage of EV buyers in the respective countries, Toyota offers some generous peace of mind for owners. In Thailand, bZ4X owners will receive an 8-year/160,000-km battery warranty, a 5-year/150,000-km extended warranty, and a THB 30,000 (~RM 3.9k) discount for the wall charger.

Meanwhile in Indonesia, the same 8-year/160,000-km battery warranty is also offered along with a free service fee program for up to 3 years/60,000 km. Indo bZ4X owners will also receive 2 chargers, a mobile charger and a wall charger for free.

The Thai-spec bZ4X is listed at THB 1,836,000 (~RM 236k) while in Indonesia, the bZ4X is listed at IDR 1.19 billion (~RM 356k). It’s shocking (no pun intended) that the electric SUV is more expensive in Indonesia after conversion despite being the lower-spec variant.

Still, the bZ4X is also available for leasing via Toyota’s Kinto subscription service in both countries and while the rates have not been revealed in Thailand, it starts from IDR 20 million (~RM 6k) a month in Indonesia.

Back home, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) had pretty much confirmed that the Toyota bZ4X is planned to be launched in Malaysia. Based on the prices in Thailand and Indonesia, it certainly will not be cheap, whichever variant is on the cards.

Toyota’s Malaysian distributor had also set up a few fast chargers at its HQ so it’s now only a matter of when will the bZ4X arrive here.
