Commit any of these traffic offences during Chinese New Year and Anthony Loke says you go straight to court

If road users commit any of these 7 traffic offences during the Chine New Year period, Anthony Loke’s going to drag you all to court as these motoring transgressions will not be compoundable.

Simply put, if you’re ticketed for any of these offences, you will not be able to pay a fine but will have to face a judge in court for a suitable sentence to be handed out.

The 7 major traffic offenses are:

• cutting queue
• overtaking on double lines
• running red lights
• speeding
• use of mobile phones while driving
• not wearing a seat belt or helmet
• driving on the emergency lane

“There will be no compound issues for these offences. Offenders will be referred to court,” said Transport Minister Anthony Loke to reporters on 17 January 2023 following the officiating of Ops Bersepadu and Road Safety Campaign in conjunction with the festive period.

Ops Bersepadu is already underway, having started on 18 January 2023, and will run 28 January 2023.

He also added that goods vehicles will be banned from roads during the festive period to further reduce the expected congestion. This ban comes into effect two days before Chinese New Year, on January 20 and 21, and two days after, on January 24 and 25.

Loke reiterated that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will be stricter in carrying out enforcement this year, starting with the ops that will see 2,000 JPJ enforcement officers deployed during the festive period.

JPJ officers will even ride as passengers on express buses under disguise to monitor the drivers and bus conditions.

Loke is keen to increase the road safety literacy rate as the numbers are still unsatisfactory, based on the 119 road deaths recorded during last year’s Chinese New Year festive period.

Even daily road deaths are still appalling, indicating low road safety literacy. Last year, police statistics recorded 370,286 crashes and 4,539 deaths.
