Back in May 2020, Volvo Malaysia launched the 2020 Volvo S60 T8 CKD, priced the same as the imported version at RM 295,888 (SST included). Features remained largely the same as well, save for a few items like the removal of 12V socket in the boot and split folding seats.
Some were expecting a drop in price but as Volvo mentioned during the launch of the CBU version, it was already priced as a locally-assembled one. And that under RM 300k, no direct rivals come close to what it has to offer. Its output figures alone are enough for the Volvo S60 T8 to get a spot in our Car of the Year shortlist.
Being a T8 model, the Volvo S60 gets a twincharged (supercharged and turbocharged) 2.0-litre engine mated to a plug-in hybrid system, allowing for a combined system output of 407 PS and 640 Nm. An 8-speed automatic handles transmission duty.
The T8 nomenclature also indicates that the Volvo S60 is an all-wheel drive model – the engine powers the front wheels, while the electric motors drive the rear wheels. 0-100 km/h sprint is claimed to be completed in 4.4 seconds.
If that’s not impressive enough, the S60 T8 is equipped with Nappa leather upholstery, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, full City Safety ADAS suite, and Pilot Assist – a level 2 semi-autonomous driving feature, the only car in its segment with this capability.
The Volvo S60 T8 doesn’t just shadow its rivals on paper, it feels more special than the BMW 330i M Sport or the Mercedes-Benz C300 AMG Line in the flesh. The well-appointed cabin, ergonomics, and calibration of controls are some of the best examples in its class. This is why the Volvo S60 T8 gets a spot in Wapcar’s 2020 Car of the Year awards.
The quest for automotive knowledge began as soon as the earliest memories. Various sources information, even questionable ones, have been explored including video games, television, magazines, or even internet forums. Still stuck in that rabbit hole.
