Daihatsu Copen GR Sport should be on everyone’s wish list

Doesn’t matter you identify as a male, female or a non-binary person, you can’t argue against that the Daihatsu Copen is one of the cutest roadsters out there.

Everything was made better when Toyota’s in-house tuning arm, GR Sport worked their magic on the little roadster.

Displayed at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show (TMS) is the souped-up Daihatsu Copen GR Sport in all its top-down glory.

Let’s talk about styling first. The Copen GR Sport rides on shiny 16-inch BBS wheels to go match the racier looking front and rear bumpers with dual exhaust outlets – which are real mind you.

All the go faster-looking bits helps to give the car optimised aerodynamics and engine cooling.

Speaking of engine, the Copen GR Sport gets a 658cc turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol engine that packs 64 PS and 92 Nm of torque to drive the front wheels. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic but why would anyone want the latter?

While the engine output doesn’t seem all that inspiring, mind you that the Copen GR Sport only weighs a featherweight 850 kg.

Other mechanical enhancements include a recalibrated sports suspension, additional undercarriage bracing and retuned electronic power steering.

Inside, it gets a Momo steering wheel that is void of distractions buttons, Recaro GR Sport seats and GR display dials. There’s a little switch by the centre console that activates the retractable hardtop mechanism which takes 20 seconds to retract completely.

Seeing that Perodua is not into the business of selling emotionally appealing cars, we will have to wait for one of these beauties to pop up at a grey importer lot.
