The Toyota Avanza is no longer in Malaysia and replacing it is the all-new 2022 Toyota Veloz. The twin to the newly-launched (and hotly sought-after) D27A Perodua Alza has yet to reveal its launch date but UMW Toyota (UMWT) recently uploaded another feature teaser on its social media channels.
This time, the highlight is the 7-seater MPV/SUV/crossover’s ground clearance which is measured at 190 mm. That’s 30 mm higher than the Alza with variants bearing the 16-inch wheels (H and AV) having a mere 160 mm of ground clearance.
Still, the height of both 7-seaters is shorter than the Mitsubishi Xpander’s 205 mm ground clearance as well as the Perodua Aruz which measures 220 mm. Then again, the Aruz is built on a semi-ladder frame chassis which really makes the Xpander the closer rival to the Veloz.
Speaking of height differences, the figures mentioned by UMWT is also less than the Indonesian-spec Veloz’s numbers. For reference, the Indo Veloz has a ground clearance of 205 mm.
However, sources in Indonesia have said that there are no separate suspension settings for the Veloz in different markets. In essence, the ride height should be identical, and the difference is likely due to the different measuring methods applied by both Toyota Indonesia and UMWT.
Just like the Alza, the Veloz is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol (106 PS/137 Nm) that is paired with a D-CVT automatic transmission. Unlike its Perodua twin which is offered with 3 variants, only one variant will be offered for the Veloz.
The upcoming Veloz won’t be some carbon copy of the Alza (or vice versa) with bigger 17-inch wheels, LED headlights and DRLs, roof rails, wireless charger, as well as ambient lighting among the features unveiled. Not to forget, Apple CarPlay that seems to be easier to access than the Alza
It also comes with Toyota Safety Sense ADAS but for now, only Pre-Collision System (PCS) and Adaptive Cruise Control are mentioned.
Even though the 2022 Toyota Veloz will be assembled locally alongside the Alza at Perodua’s Rawang plant, you can expect the Toyota to cost more than the Perodua. Prices are estimated to be around RM 95,000 and bookings are currently open.
