Motor shows are often the place to catch some new metal in the flesh. It is the place to catch local debuts of brand-new models but these prestigious events aren’t only reserved for new cars. Sometimes, a classic can capture hearts better than any concept car at a motor show.
Especially if it’s a rare and legendary one like the KPGC10 Nissan Skyline GT-R, more recognizably known as the “Hakosuka”. This immaculate Hakosuka is being displayed at the ongoing 2022 Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) at Nissan’s booth to commemorate the company’s 70-year anniversary in Thailand.

The first-gen Skyline GT-R was sold from 1969 to 1972 and only 1,945 cars were made which makes it a pretty rare car. It’s because of that rarity that makes the original GT-R to be so legendary and highly valuable.
Though this particular Hakosuka isn’t exactly fully-stock – it’s lowered and the black steelies are swapped with Watanabes – this is still a very clean example nevertheless. 2-door coupes are more desirable though the GT-R was initially introduced as a 4-door sedan.
Whichever body style was chosen, the Hakosuka is powered by a 2.0-litre DOHC inline-6 engine that made 162 PS and 176 Nm which for a car that weighed 1,100 kg is a rocket. The Hakosuka nickname itself is also special as it combines the Japanese word for box “hako” and the abbreviated pronunciation of Skyline “Suka”.
The Hakosuka would eventually be replaced by the KPGC110 Skyline GT-R, more recognizable as the Kenmeri Skyline which proved to be unsuccessful. Though most Skyline fans would recognize the R32 and its subsequent generations, the original GT-R is still a very important model that would influence the three important letters to any Nissan fan.
