Ahead of its official debut later this year, Honda has showcased the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Type R at the ongoing Tokyo Auto Salon.
This mirrors a similar arrangement from five years ago, when Honda showcased the then-new FK8 Civic Type R at the 2016 Paris Auto Show, before going on sale six months later.
Compared to the regular Civic, the amped-up Civic Type R gets a bespoke front bumper, side skirts, and rear bumper. The massive rear wing isn’t just for looks – like the outgoing FK8-generation Civic Type R, the rear wing helps to stabilize the car, especially at higher speeds.
Other Type R-specific bits include bespoke wheels, a unique tri-exhaust tip set up, as well as red finishing peppered into the cabin. Expect a pair of body-hugging bucket seats up front as well.
While Honda hasn’t revealed powertrain details surrounding its new-generation Civic Type R, a particular Japanese outlet has claimed that the new generation Civic Type R will carry over the current model’s turbocharged 2.0-litre K20C petrol engine, but with the aid of electric motors on each rear wheel – effectively turning the Civic Type R into a hybrid.
At the moment, the FK8 Honda Civic Type R is motivated by the aforementioned engine that does 310 PS and 400 Nm, mated to a slick six-speed manual transmission that drives the front wheels.a
