Five students killed in fiery crash near the Menora Tunnel; Cops nab trailer driver

Five individuals were killed in a horrific accident that happened along Kilometre 246 of the North-South Highway at midnight on 12-May-2022.

A spokesperson from the Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) told Harian Metro that the accident involved one car of unknown make and two heavy trailers that were carrying steel and mosaic tiles.

The Kuala Kangsar Bomba and Rescue Brigade (BBP) as well as the BBP Meru Raya, BBP Kamunting, and BBP Ipoh were immediately deployed to the scene when they received a call at 12.52 am.

According to the spokesperson, the accident involved eight victims, five of which were trapped in the car and unable to escape.

The driver and passenger of the trailer carrying steel were able to escape unhurt while the trailer carrying mosaic tiles sustained minor damage as it was rear-ended.

In another report by Bernama, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) arrested the driver of the trailer carrying metal fences for further investigation. The 28-year-old suspect will be investigated under Sectionn 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

According to the report, initial investigations revealed that the accident occured when the trailer ferrying mosaic tiles was driving on the right lane as the left lane was closed for road maintenance at the time.

The car, possibly a Honda City, ferrying the five students was following behind the trailer carrying mosaic tiles when the other trailer carrying metal fences could not brake in time and crashed into the back of the car. 

Due to the impact, the car slide forward and rear ended the trailer carrying mosaic tiles.
