GAC subjects Trumpchi M8 MPV to crash test with 8.6-tonne truck, passengers unharmed

When it comes to crash testing, car manufacturers typically crash test their cars in test labs, under controlled circumstances, without involving another different-size vehicle.

But GAC, in an effort to showcase the safety of the Trumpchi M8 MPV, subjected the model to a very unusual crash test, involving a pair of trucks.

In this crash test, GAC subjected the Trumpchi M8 to a crash test involving an 8.6-tonne truck crashing into the MPV, subsequently pushing the MPV into the rear of another truck.

The end result was as expected – the front and rear ends of the Trumpchi M8 got destroyed in the process, but crucially, the passenger compartment of the MPV remained intact. The A-pillar, B-pillar, and door sills survived the crash test, and from the video, the sliding door managed to open without much issue.

Much of this was achieved by GAC’s usage of CBS (Composite Body Solutions) composite material for the construction of the M8, which integrates metal body parts, thermoplastic composite carries, and expandable adhesive that strengthens the body structure.

Needless to say, this is a massive win for GAC, as MPVs typically need to prioritize space, thus reducing the crumple zone area. Through this crash test, it indicates that GAC has put passenger safety as their top priority.

Closer to home, WTC Automotif (M) Sdn Bhd (sister company of Edaran Tan Chong Motor) has announced that they will commence local assembly (CKD) work of GAC-branded vehicles, starting with the all-new 2023 GAC GS3. The new B-segment SUV will go on sale in Malaysia starting mid-2024.
