Geely aims to cut carbon emissions by 25% in 5 years and achieve carbon neutrality by 2045

Going green’s all the rage these days and apart from reducing emissions in the vehicles, carmakers are under a lot of public pressure to reduce their overall carbon emissions. Geely Automobile Holdings Limited has announced in its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report for 2021 that it intends to reduce the life cycle carbon emission of each vehicle it makes by over 25 percent come 2025 and to hopefully hit full carbon neutrality by 2045.

That’s no mean feat but Geely has stated its commitment in becoming an ESG leader in China’s automotive industry and will actively integrate sustainability in its future strategy to do so.

The move also makes Geely Auto the first Chinese passenger car company to commit to complying with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), which precedes a public announcement on the next phase’s carbon reduction targets following approval by the SBTi board.

Not one to do things by halves, Geely Auto has committed to the “Race to Zero” campaign led by the United Nations. The campaign’s name should be an indicator of what the target is.

Carbon neutrality goes well beyond a vehicle’s emissions and will see Geely Auto implementing carbon reduction measures in its supply chain, manufacturing and vehicle use.

Among the key initiatives as part of that will comprise the use of renewable electricity and recycled raw materials in the supply chain, adopting zero-emission and more cost-effective photovoltaic power in production plants as well as increasing the proportion of new energy vehicle sales (exceeding 40 percent) with the Zeekr brand contributing significantly to that.

Lastly, Geely Auto has also published its “Sustainable Finance Framework” in May 2022 that will see it issuing green and sustainability bonds or loans at lower financing costs in the future to fulfil its target.
