Just like how the Proton X50 is getting the attention among Malaysians, so is the Geely Coolray in the Philippines. The X50’s Filipino twin has sold 2,158 units in 2020 which puts it in the top 10 best-selling passenger vehicles in the country for that year.

This was based on a January 2021 report that was released by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI). CAMPI is the Filipino equivalent of the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) in which both compile monthly sales data from members.

Speaking of members, it’s of note that MG Philippines isn’t a member of CAMPI and as such, it doesn't share its sales data to the organisation. So, could the MG ZS sell more than the Geely Coolray last year?

Nevertheless, the Coolray’s figures are something that Sojitz G Auto Philippines (SGAP), Geely's distributor in the Philippines, are proud of despite a challenging 2020. The SUV landed on the number 1 spot in the B-segment SUV market last year for four months in June, July, October, and December.

December sales were the highest for the Coolray with 520 units sold, representing 24% of the total units sold in 2020.

SGAP President & CEO Mikihisa Takayama said “We have surprisingly rebounded to deliver our sales targets in most of the months last year. The Coolray became a top-seller among the 5-seater subcompact crossovers for 4 months in 2020. And after selling a total of 2,158 units last year, we landed on CAMPI and AVID’s top 10 spot for passenger vehicles in terms of sales.”

Closer to home, Proton sold more units of the X50 based on their 2020 sales report. Proton sold 3,787 units of the X50 but there is a long waiting list for Malaysia’s most hyped car of 2020. If you couldn’t wait any longer, might we suggest its bigger brother, the Proton X70?
