Between January to August 2022, both Proton and Perodua have put slightly more than a quarter of a million new cars on local roads.

As of August 2022, Perodua had registered 171,728 units while Proton says it did 87,481 units, but Proton’s numbers is including 4,040 units of exports. Discounting exports, Proton’s domestic year-to-date sales stands at 83,441 units.

Given the price advantage accorded by their quasi-national marques status, the top 5 best-selling cars are as expected, dominated by Proton and Perodua, which has a combined total market share of 56 percent (as of July 2022).

Toyota and Honda don't usually announce monthly sales of their respective models but it won't make a difference to the Top 5 best-selling models ranking.

The Toyota Vios and Honda City duo will typically rank behind the Proton X50, followed by their hatchback counterparts the Toyota Yaris and Honda City Hatchback.

The 2022 Perodua Alza could've easily scored a spot on the top-10 ranking but not this year, as deliveries are only just starting. To date, Perodua has collected over 51,000 bookings for the 7-seater, and has delivered 7,682 units between July and August.

There is a circa 12-month waiting list for the Alza. Disruptions in supply chain and labour shortage at its suppliers mean that Perodua's Rawang plant can only produce 3,500 units of the Alza every month. However, the global chip supply shortage situation is easing and sustaining a further ramp up of production is Perodua's top priority at the moment.
