Expected here in Q1 2022
Comes before Landtrek, e-2008 EV
CKD in Gurun, Kedah
Peugeot's gameplan for Malaysia is a pretty much well-known now: come 2022, brand custodian Bermaz Auto Alliance Sdn. Bhd. (BAASB) is looking to launch no less than 3 models, and one of them is the locally-assembled (CKD Gurun, Kedah) Peugeot 2008.
Sources close to the matter confirmed that it's slated to launch here in Q1 2022. This timeline means it precedes the arrival of the Landtrek and e-2008 EV, which are due to arrive in Q3 and Q4 2022 respectively.
Though exact specifications for the Malaysian-spec car are still unclear, the 2008 sold in Thailand should be a close indicator given that cars sold there are assembled in Stellantis' Gurun plant.
Over in the Land of Smiles the 2008 gets a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder – with the PureTech petrol engine making 130 PS and 230 Nm.
It's front-wheel drive only, with power transferred to the wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Good looks is what it boasts – good enough to cinch the 2020 Red Dot Design award in the Product Design category – and that's obvious in its sharp exterior and fancy cabin.
Interspersed among the geometric interior are creature comforts such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity via its 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the i-Cockpit digital instrument cluster, a drive mode selector, and mood lighting.
On the safety front the Thailand-spec 2008 comes with active blind spot monitoring, brake warning, driver attention warning, lane keep assist, and cruise control.
Expected prices of the Peugeot 2008 in Malaysia
BAASB places the 2008 as central to the Peugeot's brand growth here: in an earlier report, we shared that the company aims to sell 1,500 to 1,800 units for financial year 2022.
Prices for the Peugeot 2008 in Thailand starts at THB 1,189,000 (approximately RM 148k). Local assembly should see the 2008 sold in Malaysia priced cheaper than that but not by too much – the previous generation Peugeot 2008 was last sold at RM 109,888.
