The Toyota Vios might be leading the B-segment sedan sales in Malaysia in 2021 but up north in Thailand, the title is being held by its arch-rival, the Honda City. During the first two months of the year, the City sold 4,213 units in total, capturing 24 percent market share.
In the data compiled by Autolife Thailand, the Toyota Vios’ Thai Eco Car twin, the Toyota Yaris Ativ sold 3,752 units which puts it at second place. The Yaris Ativ did, however, outsold the City in February 2022 with 1,871 units compared to the City’s 1,794 units.
The Yaris Ativ is powered by a smaller 1.2-litre engine to comply with the country’s Eco Car regulations and Toyota also offers the 1.5-litre Vios in the country with a different face but isn’t much of a hit with only 608 units sold in the same period.
The Thai-spec City also counts as an Eco Car as it is powered by a turbocharged 1.0-litre unit. January 2022 saw the City leading in sales by a large margin ahead of the Yaris Ativ with 2,419 units over 1,881 units. That boost is enough for the City to hold on to its position as the best-selling B-segment sedan of the year so far.
Interestingly, filling up the top 3 of the first two months of the year is the Mazda 2 Sedan which saw 2,768 units sold. The entry Mazda model was given an update in the Kingdom with a shiny new coat of paint and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, so perhaps the appeal of the ageing sedan is regaining among Thai buyers?
Unlike the pick-up truck segment which was mostly a two-way fight between the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max, the B-segment sedan market is hotly contested among 5 models. Aside from the 3 podium takers, the MG 5 and Nissan Almera also saw 4-figure sales for the first two months of the year.
The MG 5 saw 2,762 units sold while 2,237 units of the Nissan Almera were sold in January and February 2022. The MG 5 is technically cheating here as it is more of a C-segment sedan in size but costs almost the same price as the Vios and City.
Rounding out the remainder of the sales list are the Mitsubishi Attrage (869 units) and the Suzuki Ciaz (338 units). In total, 17,547 units of the B-segment sedans were sold in Thailand in January and February 2022.
