Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI) will start local assembly (CKD) production of its fully electric Ioniq 5 soon. It’s probably the world’s first CKD production for the electric compact SUV.

Currently, the Ioniq 5 is only produced at Hyundai Motor’s Ulsan plant.

Ioniq 5 is not a small hatchback, and those are definitely not small-sized men

According to our sister-site Autofun Indonesia, the Indonesian market Ioniq 5 will be launched in March’s Indonesia International Motor Show, which due to rising cases of Covid-19, has been pushed back to 31-March.

The Ioniq 5 will be produced at HMMI’s 150,000 units per year vehicle manufacturing plant in Kota Deltamas, in Cikarang, the same plant that is also building the Hyundai Creta.

Apart from the vehicle manufacturing in Kota Deltamas, Hyundai is also building a RM 4.6 billion, 10 GWh battery manufacturing plant with LG Energy Solution in Karawang. The plant is expected to be completed within this year.

According to Autofun, the Indonesian market Ioniq 5 will come in two variants, both rear-wheel drive – a Standard Range 58 kWh (170 PS) variant and the Long Range 72.6 kWh (217 PS) variant.

Depending on wheel size, the 58 kWh model can do up to 384 km on a single charge, while the 72.6 kWh model can do up to 481 km, all under WLTP test cycle.

European market model with digital side mirrors

In Europe, there’s a new variant with an even larger 77.4 kWh battery, equipped with camera-based digital side view mirrors, but details will only be announced later this year.

The highlight of the Ioniq 5 is its dual 400V / 800 V ultra-fast charging hardware, supporting up to 350 kW DC fast charging, allowing the vehicle to be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes.

The Ioniq 5’s V2L (vehicle-to-load) feature also allows it to function like a power bank on wheels, literally. The vehicle can supply up to 3.6 kW of power, more than enough for all types of household electrical appliances that you can carry in a car.

Yes it can power a rice cooker

As for its price, Autofun estimates that the Ioniq 5 will be launched in Indonesia with an estimated priced at around IDR 800 million.

Solar panel option for sun-powered trickle charging available in some markets

For reference, the Hyundai Kona Electric with a base 39.2 kWh battery sells in Indonesia for IDR 734.9 million. In Malaysia, this is the same as the entry Kona Electric e-Lite variant, which sells for RM 149,888.

Closer to home, Hyundai Sime Darby Motors will be launching the Ioniq 5 within the next few weeks, but ours will be imported from Korea, like the Kona Electric.

Expect prices to start upwards of RM 200,000.
