The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has been in production (CKD) in Indonesia since March 2022 at Hyundai’s Cikarang plant and was Indonesia’s first locally-assembled electric vehicle (EV). Hyundai’s most successful EV has been making waves in the archipelago, even outselling the Honda CR-V at one point, but it is lacking in some Indonesian identity.
That might change following Indonesia’s Minister of State Owned Enterprises (BUMN), Erick Thohir recent visit to South Korea. The minister recently shared on his social media that he has met the Executive Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, Chung Eui-Son in South Korea.
Based on the caption on his Instagram post, Thohir wrote that the meeting discussed among other things, the further development of Indonesia’s EV ecosystem together with LG Energy Solutions (LGES), an upcoming football friendly between Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and the Indonesia FA (PSSI) All-Stars as well as offering limited units of the Ioniq 5 with batik upholstery.
The post mentioned that there are plans to produce 100 units of the Ioniq 5 with a batik interior to commemorate the 50-year diplomatic relation between Indonesia and South Korea aside from giving the EV some Indonesian identity.
The Ioniq 5 has been very well-received among Indonesians with nearly 2,000 units sold in 2022 which makes it one of the best-selling EVs in the archipelago. The Indonesian government has also recently announced subsidies for locally assembled EVs which the Ioniq 5 qualifies under.
While this announcement was made by an Indonesian minister, it’s still not an official announcement by Hyundai. Nevertheless, the 100-unit batik-inspired Ioniq 5 could likely be an Indonesia-only exclusive special edition.
Besides Indonesia, the Ioniq 5 is also locally assembled in Singapore but both assemblies are solely for the domestic market. The Ioniq 5 currently offered in Malaysia is fully imported (CBU) from Korea and is available in 3 variants:
