To say the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an immense success in Indonesia might be a bit of an understatement with the electric vehicle (EV) outselling the Honda CR-V in May 2022.
Indeed, reception for the Ioniq 5 has been overwhelming in the archipelago with over 800 bookings made at the 2022 Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) back in April. This accounted for 51 percent of new Hyundai cars that were booked at the motor show.
The Ioniq 5 in Indonesia is offered with 4 variants priced from IDR 718 million to IDR 829 million (~RM 214k – RM 247k). By comparison, the Malaysian-spec Ioniq 5 is available with 3 variants priced from RM 199,888 to RM 259,888 (inclusive of SST discount, until 30-June 2022) and is fully imported (CBU) from Korea.
That said, the Ioniq 5 is set to be assembled in Indonesia (CKD) some time later this year and the archipelago will be the first country outside of Korea to assemble the overwhelmingly desirable EV.
According to the May 2022 sales data by Gaikindo, 195 units of the Ioniq 5 were sold in Indonesia. The Ioniq 5 not only outsold the Honda CR-V (167 units) and the Wuling Almaz (100 units) but it’s also the best-selling medium-sized SUV (C-segment) for the month!
Still, C-segment SUV sales only contribute very little to the overall Indonesian new car sales. In total, only 750 units across ten models were sold in the country in that period. The Daihatsu Terios, the triplet to the Toyota Rush and Perodua Aruz sold more (768 units) in May than the entire segment combined.
However, SUVs are gaining a foothold in the archipelago as one of the most popular segments with the Honda HR-V becoming the country’s best-selling B-segment SUV with 1,799 units sold, putting it 6th overall in May.
It’s a double dose of celebrations for Honda in Indonesia as the Honda Brio relinquishes the title of the best-selling car of the month with 4,121 units sold. Meanwhile, April’s best-seller, the Toyota Avanza slipped to 7th place with 1,792 units sold.
