Bookings for the Ioniq 6 have finally started and Hyundai immediately received 37,446 pre-orders on the first day. This sets a new record for the company for the highest day one pre-order sales figure.
Hyundai Motor said the number is far higher than the Ioniq 5. In contrast, the carmaker received 23,760 units on the first day the Ioniq 5 opened for booking last year.
The company believes that customers were enamoured by the car’s innovative exterior and interior design as well as the industry-leading travel range the Ioniq 6 has to offer.
Unveiled at the Busan Motor Show in July, the Ioniq 6 is also built on Hyundai Motor Group’s electric vehicle (EV) dedicated platform E-GMP. The same platform that underpins the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.
The EV is offered in two variants, the entry-level variant comes with a 53.0 kWh battery pack and the longer-range variant comes with a 77.4 kWh battery. Measured on the WLTP cycle, the long-range variant is capable of 610 km.
The Ioniq 6’s dual-motor setup (AWD) variant produces a combined power of 325 PS and 605 Nm. The EV is capable of making the century sprint in just 5.1 seconds.
Other than that, Hyundai also boasts that the Ioniq 6’s 0.21 Cd is one of the lowest co-efficient drag for an EV. It is certainly the lowest measurement on any Hyundai model.
As the Ioniq 6 is built on the E-GMP platform, the car also supports both 400 V and 800 V charging infrastructures with the latter as standard. With a 350-kW charger, the Ioniq 6 can charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 18 minutes.
When Hyundai first introduced the Ioniq 6, they had hoped that the EV will replicate the sales the Ioniq 5 experienced. Looks like their dreams are fast coming true based on the reception they received on the first day the car is opened for pre-orders.
There isn’t a time in memory that doesn’t involve staring at cars. After discovering the excitement of watching Schumacher vs Hakkinen, Formula 1 became a major part of life. The love for cars and F1 ultimately led to a job with CAR Magazine. The untimely death of the magazine meant a hiatus from cars at lifestyle women’s magazine Marie Claire before another opportunity came knocking again.
