In case you don’t know (which well have you been living in?), Running Man is one of Korea’s most successful variety show. In the 11 years since the show has been on air, product placement has never been as blatant as the Hyundai Staria in the show’s latest episode.
In the episode, the cast and crew were preparing to celebrate the main emcee, Yoo Jae Suk’s, 30th anniversary as an entertainer. Though he was the main topic of the conversation, "MC Yoo" was notably absent.
Yoo only arrived a little later in a shiny new Hyundai Staria. And it wasn’t just a matter of Yoo jumping out of the car, the Staria was even given its 15 seconds of fame with a short light show and a beauty shot.
The cast on the other hand appropriately reacted saying things like “Isn’t this car only for top stars?” or that “Isn’t this something you can only see at motor shows?”
But if you watch the entire episode, the Staria’s presence in the episode is not a direct advertisement. Yoo confirmed that it was an indirect advertisement later in the episode, the name of the car was even buzzed out whenever it was mentioned.
The Hyundai Staria made its world debut just last month. Two variants are offered, Staria and Staria Premium, and it comes with a choice of 7, 9, or 11-seat configuration.
According to Hyundai, the Staria’s design is inspired by the curve of light that illuminates the Earth’s horizon at sunrise when viewed from space. This explains the futuristic Star Wars-esque looks.
Closer to home, the Staria is more or less confirmed to be coming to Malaysia as Hyundai has already trademarked the name in our country last December. After seeing the car in action on Running Man, we’re curious to get up close and personal with the new MPV.
There isn’t a time in memory that doesn’t involve staring at cars. After discovering the excitement of watching Schumacher vs Hakkinen, Formula 1 became a major part of life. The love for cars and F1 ultimately led to a job with CAR Magazine. The untimely death of the magazine meant a hiatus from cars at lifestyle women’s magazine Marie Claire before another opportunity came knocking again.
