The Proton Saga received a facelift in 2019 with a host of updates. On top of that, prices were reduced, starting from RM 32,800 (RM 32,400 without SST) for the Standard MT and RM 39,800 (RM 39,300 without SST) for the Premium AT.

One of the most significant changes in the facelift exercise is the new 4-speed automatic transmission, replacing the CVT. 

Pros and cons

Having lived with both the Saga FLX and Saga 2019, the 4-speed automatic is a far better daily companion.

The transmission works smoothly and is much quieter than the CVT. It no longer hesitates upon initial throttle input with the occasional lurches from standstill. Instead, it behaves like a conventional 4-speed automatic most drivers are used to.

Another big update is the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Operation is slick, graphics are clear, and response is fairly quick. Also impressive is the audio quality from the 4-speaker system, with punchy bass and sparkly treble.

As with any Proton cars, ride and handling is well tuned. It handles reassuringly and the suspension settles quickly over lumps and bumps.

However, there are a few ergonomic issues. In the Premium variant, the rear of the cabin has no illumination. The rear seat has no adjustable headrest and is rather flat. Due to the new infotainment system, the central air vents are mounted in an awkwardly low position.

And of course, the Saga isn’t as fuel efficient as the Perodua Bezza. We recorded an average of 6.7-litre/100 km in the Saga, compared to 6.3-litre/100 km in the Bezza.

With all that being said, the Saga offers a great driving experience with some premium features. Sure, there are downsides but for the price you’re paying, there is nothing in this price range that can match its value proposition.
