After last year's Covid-19-induced delay, BMW Group Indonesia has officially launched the locally-assembled (CKD) 2021 BMW X7 in the archipelago. This makes the SUV the 8th model to be assembled at the company's Gaya Motor, Jakarta plant.
Opulent luxury at a lower price
Right off the bat, the CKD status sees the X7 priced more competitively there, with prices now starting from IDR 2.29 billion - down from the previous fully-imported (CBU) prices that started from IDR 2.72 billion. For comparison, the regular BMW 7 Series starts from IDR 1.89 billion there.
But the price drop doesn't see a shorter catalogue. The Indonesian-spec X7 wears Opulent (that's the name, a rather fitting adjective) exterior trimmings, encapsulating high-gloss chrome touches on the front, sides, and rear.
Standard features include BMW LaserLight headlights flanking the brand's largest-ever kidney grille, as well as 21-inch Style 752 Bicolour wheels.
Interior's luxury features
Stepping inside, the X7 gets a bevy of big screens, starting with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional 12.3-inch fully-digital instrument cluster with head-up display.
Other cool features include wireless smartphone connectivity on the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless charging pads, glass controls, heated/cooled cupholders, and a 20-speaker, 1,508-watt Bowers & Wilkins surround sound setup. Pretty rad stuff.
Beyond those, there's a couple of 10.2-inch touchscreens for rear-seat entertainment, and a 15,000-LED panoramic glass roof, aptly called the Sky Lounge. At night, the glass panormic roof lights up like stars and can even change colour based on ambient lighting settings.
Engine and transmission
Under the hood is a 3.0-litre straight-six turbocharged engine making 340 PS and 450 Nm, paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive system.
The X7 also comes with the xOffroad package, bringing the choice of specific off-roading drive modes such as xSand, xGravel, xRocks, and xSnow. The xOffroad package is able to adjust the SUV's ride height and suspension rebound as well.
Healthy list of safety features
Here's what the X7 gets in terms of safety features:
Adaptive cruise control with stop & go function (ACC)
Forward collision warning with brake intervention (FCW)
Lane departure warning (LDW)
Lane change warning (LCW)
Blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert (BSM, RCTA)
360-degree 3D camera
Malaysia to join the CKD list
With this, Indonesia joins Thailand as the other countries to locally-assemble the BMW X7. Prior to this, the X7 was produced exclusively at BMW's South Carolina, USA plant.
In Malaysia, we understand that BMW Malaysia will also assemble the X7 at Kulim, Kedah, joining the flagship BMW 7 Series that's already assembled here. The CBU X7 in Malaysia starts from RM 862k.
