Isuzu Malaysia’s sales grew 50% in May 2021, D-Max now No.2 behind Hilux

It looks like Isuzu Malaysia has a winner on hand. Following its launch in April, the 2021 Isuzu D-Max has overtaken the Mitsubishi Triton to become the No.2 best-selling pick-up truck in Malaysia, behind the Toyota Hilux.
For the month of May 2021, Isuzu Malaysia saw its total sales jumped from 667 units in April 2021, to 1,014 units. Of the total, 514 units were contributed by the D-Max, while the rest came from Isuzu lorries.

The Toyota Hilux however, is still holding firm onto its No.1 position, with 1,543 units sold. Ranking behind the second place D-Max (514 units) is the Mitsubishi Triton, with 448 units sold.

However, the Mitsubishi Triton still holds a strong No.2 position for total cumulative sales (January to May 2021 sales), with 3,298 units versus third place Ford Ranger’s 2,138 units, and Isuzu D-Max’s 1,733 units.
The previous D-Max was not a strong seller and many Isuzu dealers had already sold out their stocks by March so the gap is to be expected.
The gap between it and Triton is still big, and Mitsubishi isn't sitting idle either. The tri-diamond badge has recently launched the Mitsubishi Triton Athelete in April, the same month Isuzu launched its D-Max.
The Toyota Hilux however, is so far ahead that it sells over 4 times more than all its rivals combined sales, at 9,764 units.
However, sales will certainly drop again in June as all car dealers are closed during this MCO 3.0, and the ongoing chip supply shortage is affecting many manufacturers so it's hard to say who will stay on top in the coming months.
Imported from Thailand, prices for the Isuzu D-Max ranges from RM 88,599 for the 1.9-litre Single Cab variant, to RM 141,938 for the highest specifications 3.0-litre Double-Cab X-Terrain variant.
The latter gets a comprehensive range of advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) features, including adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane departure warning (LDW), and autonomous emergency braking (AEB).
The X-Terrain variant is also covered by a class-leading 7-year/unlimited mileage warranty. All other variants get a 5-year/150,000 km warranty.
