JPJ officers now equipped with GoPro cameras to record road offenses in stunning 6K

Think twice before whipping out your phone to reply to a quick message or even cutting queues on the road because there will be a few extra eyes on these streets. Besides the occasional dashcams from the public, JPJ officers will also be armed with their own camera gear to record any road offenses.

Their weapon tool of choice is the GoPro Max 360 which according to GoPro’s website is capable of shooting 360-degree spherical footage in 6K but clearly, our officers won’t be using these for their vlogs.

According to JPJ Director-General, Datuk Zailani Hashim, the action cameras will be operated by officers from the Motorcycle Enforcement Unit as a method to ensure road users comply with the road and safety rules.

The cameras would be able to record offenses committed by road users, especially during the upcoming Aidilfitri season. Monitoring would be carried out on users who beat the red light, overtake on the left lane or over double lines, and not wearing a seatbelt or helmet while on the move besides cutting queues as well as using a phone while driving.

“JPJ will implement fewer roadblocks during the festive season to reduce congestion and ease the flow of traffic,” Zailani said. “Our officers equipped with GoPro Max 360 surveillance cameras will be monitoring the traffic and any recorded offenses will be sent to the operations room before a summon is issued to the offender.

Zailani was speaking at a press conference for the ‘kick-off’ programme for the Aidilfitri operation at the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza. The operation starts from 29-April to 9-May 2022 while the monitoring will be more focused on hot spots identified by JPJ that frequently have accidents.

Besides relying on the GoPro footage, JPJ is also relying on the public for any reports of traffic offenses. These complaints can be reported through the JPJ e-complaint portal and snitches informants will receive incentives if the offenses reported are valid.
