Just 3 percent of Perodua's output will go to Toyota, circa 9.9k cars for 2023

Just 3 percent of Perodua's output will go to Toyota, circa 9.9k cars for 2023 01

  • 25 percent of production capacity to be taken up by D74A 2023 Perodua Axia
  • 330,000 units will be produced at Perodua’s two plants in Rawang
  • Around 6,600 units of Toyota Veloz will be produced for 2023

Perodua has two vehicle manufacturing subsidiaries in Malaysia, operating two plants in Rawang - Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. (PGMSB) and Perodua Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. (PMSB).

Both are managed by Daihatsu Motor via the holding company Perodua Auto Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (PCSB), itself 41 percent owned by Daihatsu, 10 percent by the Daihatsu-affiliated trading company Mitsui & Co., with the remaining owned by Perodua.

Daihatsu itself is a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor and there is a well-established contract manufacturing agreement where Daihatsu takes lead in the development of models built to meet the specific needs of this region (i.e. Thailand’s Eco Car and Indonesia’s LCGC requirements), building them and selling it back to Toyota.

This is seen as a much more efficient, cost-effective way of developing more products.

In Malaysia, Perodua manufacturers the Toyota Rush and Toyota Veloz at the PMSB plant, which also builds the Perodua Aruz and Perodua Alza.

Just 3 percent of Perodua's output will go to Toyota, circa 9.9k cars for 2023 01

According to Perodua’s forecast production plans presented during the company's 2023 Outlook briefing on Tuesday, only 3 percent of the 330,000 cars produced will go to UMW Toyota Motor, referring to the Toyota Rush and Toyota Veloz.

The Toyota Rush is a slow selling and ageing model, so we expect no more than 1 percent will go to the 7-seater SUV based on the previous generation Toyota Avanza.

Just 3 percent of Perodua's output will go to Toyota, circa 9.9k cars for 2023 02

Assuming that the Toyota Veloz will take up the remaining 2 percent, this would mean that sales for the Toyota Veloz for 2023 will be capped at around 6,600 units, or 550 units per month.

Compared to the Perodua Alza’s planned production volume of 36,300 cars, this would mean that the Alza is forecasted to sell around 5.5 times more than the Veloz. Of course, forecast production numbers and sales targets don’t have a direct 1:1 relation as Perodua maintains a minimum 0.5 month of stock supply, hence why the forecasted production numbers is 16,000 units more than Perodua’s 2023 sales target of 314,000 units.

The Toyota Veloz costs RM 19,500 more than the Perodua Alza, which the Veloz is based on. The additional price buys you the following:

  • Chunkier front fenders
  • Different front bumper
  • LED daytime running lights
  • Full width LED taillights
  • 17-inch wheels
  • Functional roof rails (up to 75 kg)
  • 30 mm higher ground clearance
  • Soft-padded dashboard
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Qi wireless charging
  • Automatic air-conditioning
  • Inner door grab handle
  • LED interior ambient lighting
  • Telescopic adjusting steering wheel

Being the more expensive model, the Veloz’s sales volume will of course be lower than the Perodua Alza.

As for the forecasted production volumes for Perodua-badged models, focus will be on the all-new D74A 2023 Perodua Axia, which will be launched within this month.

Just 3 percent of Perodua's output will go to Toyota, circa 9.9k cars for 2023 05

As an all-new model, interest will be high and Perodua is allocating 25 percent of its production capacity to the A-segment hatchback.

Following closely behind is the Perodua Bezza (23 percent) – the model with the longest waiting list, between 6.5 to 9.5 months.

The Perodua Myvi, which currently has a waiting period of between 5.5 to 7.5 months, will take up 21 percent.

The remaining 31 percent will be split between three models - the Perodua Ativa (11 percent), Perodua Alza (11 percent), and the slow selling Perodua Aruz (6 percent).
