The public car park adjacent to the Kinabalu National Park has collapsed due to incessant rain over the past week. A viral video has been circulating around social media showing the extend of the damage though the 2-lane road next to it is not affected.
Located at km 20 Jalan Ranau-Tamparuli in the Kundasang highlands in Ranau, the district police chief, Sammy Newton, believed that the landslide happened earlier this morning as the police department was alerted at 7.15 am.
He told reporters that the affected area was 150 m by 100 m in size, and the earth fell 200 m down into the ravine.
No fatality was reported as the landslide did not affect any villages or settlements, though Sammy added that the estimated loss is still unknown.
That said, the car park was presently not in use as Sabah Park authorities had earlier cordoned off the car park after cracks appeared on the road surface.
The Public Works Department has already been alerted of the damage and will take immediate action to repair the infrastructure.
However, Deputy Chief Minister Bung Mokhtar Radin told Free Malaysia Today that the public must understand that incidents have been reported at many locations so repair works will take some time.
