Lancer/ Inspira’s ambitious overtake ends in massive crash and serious injuries

Over the weekend, pictures of a wrecked Mitsubishi Lancer (or is it a Proton Inspira?), Volkswagen Scirocco, Perodua Bezza, and a lorry went viral on social media. While no deaths were reported and the Lancer and Scirocco drivers walked away with no injuries, the same could not be said about the passengers of the Bezza and lorry.

Selangor Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief Supt Azman Shariat confirmed that the accident happened at around 8.06 am on 10-October-2021. The Mitsubishi Lancer was heading from Batu Caves to Ulu Yam at the time.

During the journey, the Lancer attempted to overtake the Perodua Bezza in a corner well-known by all Ulu Yam goers to be a blind corner. As a result, the Lancer collided head-first with the lorry coming from the opposite direction.

The crash sent the Lancer spinning into the Bezza while the Volkswagen Scirocco was unable to stop in time to avoid the two cars.

Azman told Kosmo that the Bezza was carrying 3 Vietnamese nationals aged between 24 to 30 years old at the time of the accident.

The driver suffered from a broken shoulder and leg while one of the passengers suffered from a broken neck. All three victims were sent to the Selayang Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the 51-year-old driver sustained minor scrapes on his legs as a result of the crash. Both the Lancer and Scirocco drivers were unhurt during the incident.

All parties except the victims still receiving treatment at the hospital have made a police report. An investigation will be carried out under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
