Globally, Porsche customers in China are some of the youngest in the world, averaging just 35 years old, compared to 53 in the USA and Germany. Porsche China also has the highest proportion of female customers, at 47 percent, suggesting very high upward mobility of women there.
Those numbers have been more or less unchanged for the last 5 years but it is the demographics of Porsche Taycan buyers that are surprising even Porsche China themselves.
As you already know, the all-electric Porsche Taycan is unlike any other Porsche, and because of that, the Taycan is also attracting a totally different group of even younger customers.
The average age of a Porsche Taycan buyer in China is only 30, said Jens Puttfarcken, the outgoing CEO of Porsche China, Hongkong and Macau, during a media interview with the Chinese press.
Also, Puttfarcken said two-thirds of Chinese Taycan buyers have never driven a Porsche before, proving that the Taycan has been extremely successful in growing Porsche’s customer base.
Last year, sales of the Porsche Taycan in China jumped more than 5 times, increasing from 1,400 units in 2020 to 7,315 units in 2021.
China alone contributed 17 percent of total Taycans sold worldwide (41,296). China is also Porsche’s most important market, contributing 32 percent of Porsche’s global sales - 301,915 cars in 2021, up 11 percent from 2020, a new record for the Stuttgart-based company.
Jens Puttfarcken will be ending his 4-year tenure in China, and will be moving to Audi AG as Head of Sales Europe. Michael Kirsch, currently the CEO of Porsche Japan, will succeed him effective 1-June 2022.
