If you somehow thought that Volkswagen's pivot into the electric vehicle (EV) era will result in less performance vehicles, well, maybe it's time to rethink that: this is the Volkswagen ID.X concept, and it's every bit today's Golf R, albeit an electrified one.
Sitting on VW's new all-electric modular platform - dubbed MEB - the ID.X shares a few components with the rest of the electric-only ID lineup. Chief among them is the 82 kWh battery pack from the ID.4, and electric motors that make a peak power output of 333 PS.

All that is transferred to the ground via an all-wheel drive system.
But that's more where that came from. VW's engineers managed to make it 200 kilogrammes lighter than the ID.4.

With this much fat trimmed, the ID.X goes from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds. Oh, and it has drift mode too!
Lighter than the usual, more powerful, AWD, drift mode. Sounds awfully familiar, doesn't it?

Other than all the good bits under the skin, the ID.X gets bright green highlights to break up the grey on the exterior and interior. Too bad we weren't afforded a better look at the body, but it should look delightfully racy if the wheels are any indication.
Although VW's CEO Ralf Brandstätter says the model isn't heading for production, the company will "take up many ideas" from the project. A good sign - this means that the 'R' dream lives on in an increasingly electrified future.
